The course will introduce the participants to the Geographical Information System (GIS) concepts, devices, data, operations and capability. At the end of the training course, the trainees are expected to perform basic GIS operations including making maps and basic GIS data manipulations
WHAT ARE THE MAIN TRAINING OBJECTIVES?
The aim of this course is to provide both a solid theoretical understanding and a comprehensive practical introduction to the use of geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies for map preparation and spatial data management, natural resources management, etc.
THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES ARE PLANNED TO BE ACHIEVED BY THE END OF THE TRAINING:
Students who complete the full course will be able to:
Demonstrate a generic understanding of what GIS is.
Demonstrate an appreciation of the specialist knowledge needed to build a proper GI system.
Demonstrate an understanding of how GIS can be used in different industries.
Demonstrate an understanding of the functionality available from a GIS.
Demonstrate an understanding of models of the real world.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of the vector data model.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of the raster data model.
Understand the concept of attribute extractions from real world entities.
Explain components of a reference system.
Identify an appropriate map projection for a specific task.
Convert from one projection and or reference system to another.
Include fundamental elements on a new map.
Include symbology reference on the map.
Create and execute a simple vector spatial query under supervision.
Create and execute a simple raster spatial query under supervision
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is applicable to the personnel engaged in map preparation and spatial data management, natural resources management, etc. The participants should have been introduced to basic map reading and particular those engaged in spatial data management, field data collection, etc from government institutions, local and international NGO staff as well as UN Agencies staff. There are no special prerequisites for this course but a basic understanding of maps would be useful. Also, basic computing skills will help participants better understand the units dealing with GIS data handling.
The course introduces acquisition and preprocessing of data for mapping using open source GIS and spatial analysis tools.The topics covered in the course include the following:
Introduction to geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies;
Map projections and coordinate systems;
Processing of digital geographic information;
Using QGIS to digitize vector layers from a scanned map;
Using QGIS for importing tabular data into GIS, data correction and interpolation;
Analysis to generate new information and knowledge;
Dissemination of new information and knowledge;
GIS as a decision support tool;
QGIS-Based GIS Practical Exercises;
It is expected that participants have good computer skills and basic knowledge of Mapping, most of the course will be practical.

ABOUT THE TRAINER
Nasr Hamid finished a Master in applied Geoscience at Al-Neelain University in Sudan in 2010 with a specialization in Remote Sensing Hydro-geophysics and Modeling. In 2010 he was appointed at the Faculty of Petroleum and Minerals of Al-Neelain University as a junior lecturer in Hydro-informatics, lecturing theory and concepts of Remote Sensing Geophysics to BSc and MSc students. Furthermore, he developed and supervised computer-assisted courses on geophysics, image processing and GIS with HydroRift Company in Sudan. He finished many short courses in IHE Delft Institute in the Netherlands on the integration of remote sensing, and hydro-modeling. Since September 2012 he is working with GSA organization as hydrogeologist. He participated in projects related to water exploration, drilling, land-use change, flood modeling and the use of remote sensing data for urban and rural applications.
