Background:
Growth, Enterprise, Employment & Livelihoods (GEEL) is USAID-funded project designed to promote and facilitate inclusive economic growth in Somalia.  The project is currently focusing on the agricultural sector (livestock, fisheries & horticulture) with particular and increased focus on integration of youth and women in the value chains with emphasis on expanding and incentiving youth led enterprises through skills development and enterprise and workforce development.It will also seek to strengthen the business enabling environment through improving access to finance, policy and regulation, and business development services. Particular focus will be given to increase the participation of women and youth in the economy as entrepreneurs, employers, and employees.
Objectives:
The Communications Specialist is responsible for meeting the communication needs of GEEL with a particular focus on gathering professional content for products to document GEEL activities and market their impact. The function will ensure the collection and dissemination of critical information and content (stories, film & photography) for communication products in compliance with GEEL’s guidelines and protocols around story-gathering activities.
Rationale:
The Communications Specialist will play a crucial role within GEEL especially in terms of content gathering in project locations when activities are taking place.
Communications Specialist General Responsibilities:
The Communications specialist will be responsible for the following tasks:

Liaise closely with the GEEL project team in to ensure coordination of activities on the ground and that photos and videos are captured, proper release forms are signed, log lists and captions are recorded, and assets are sent electronically to GEEL editing and distribution.
Plan and lead media-quality, story gathering trips to the field, ensuring key work is documented with a view to telling the story of how GEEL’s work has a positive impact.
Produce timely, accurate and accessible products on GEEL’s projects – these include photos, success stories, one-pagers, and other copy for use in online and printed publications.
Contribute to the production of media materials such as short films, radio and video clips, training materials, etc.
Support the management of GEEL’s web and social media platforms and project photo library.
Update and maintain the GEEL’s contact database(s) and ensure continuous accuracy and relevance of entries.
Ensure protection of GEEL’s brand and that all procedures, protocols and policies are followed, including guidelines for interviewing people and documenting permission for use of digital images.
Respond to queries and technical staff requests in collaboration with the Communications Specialist, including the production of branded GEEL branded materials such as one-pagers, folders, and event documents.
Any other assigned duties as appropriate

Reporting:
The Communications Specialist will report to the GEEL Communications Manager or his/her designated
Qualifications/Experience:
Qualifications:

At least Bachelor`s degree in mass communications, marketing, journalism, international relations or (alternatively, equivalent academic accomplishment in relevant field and 2-5 additional years of relevant experience);

Knowledge/Experience:

At least 3 – 4 years’ technical experience in performing communications and media and activities
Strong planning skills – understanding how to plan and implement strategy
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and experience writing communications outputs success stories, case studies etc
Basic photographic skills
Fluency in written and spoken Somali and English
Advanced competency in Microsoft Office
Ability to travel throughout Somalia and Somaliland
Energy and enthusiasm for information and knowledge creation, sharing, and management process and materials
Ability to work well in diverse teams but also able to work independently with minimum supervision
Previous work experience in the horn of Africa preferred

Skills

Understanding of the commissioning process for photography and video
Basic Adobe Creative Suite skills
Basic video skills
Ability to prioritize and be persistent in follow-through;
Hard-working, self-motivated and possess a positive attitude.
Excellent oral, writing English and Somali languages
Willingness to travel inside Somalia –all regions.
Able to work outdoors when conducting trails, farmer trainings and demonstration plots.
