NAGAAD network partnering with OXFAM, in collaboration with SONYO, is implementing ‘Talo-Wadaag (Decision Sharing) project’, an intervention of action proposes to increase the voice, participation and representation of women and youth in decision-making chains for a peaceful and prosperous Somaliland. This consortium composed of Somaliland women and youth umbrella organizations NAGAAD and SONYO, together with Oxfam, proposes a range of activities to combat these issues. We build on strong experience. NAGAAD has successfully lobbied women economic empowerment in Somaliland business, advocating for an increased participation of women in formal decision-making structures, such as the national parliament and the local councils. Oxfam brings in years of experience in Somaliland, particular working on gender and youth, which is enshrined in its Oxfam Country Strategy that seeks to support building a peaceful and prosperous Somaliland.
The project aims to support women in Somaliland, Strengthened women and youth business owner associations to increase their voice in decision making chains, particularly towards conflicts. Female-led businesses employ many more women than do their male-led business counterparts, which also makes them more likely to house females in more powerful positions within those businesses. However, female led businesses are also more likely to fail according to a World Bank Report on the private sector in Somaliland (2016). It is therefore important that female businesses are strong. The stronger female-led businesses are, the more likely they will be able to wield influence through formal and informal channels, such as the Chamber of Commerce. Thus meeting one of Nagaad’s, as well as, Oxfam Novib thematic areas, this focuses on improving women’s economic empowerment. Project activities are focused on women decision making participation, and business skills, advocacy on women’s economic rights, thereby supporting sustainable social, human and economic development processes, and directly contributing to improving the quality of the lives of the target beneficiaries.
