Strengthening the capacity of the smallholder farmers through agricultural extension services is crucial for the common good of the people as this brings better life for the people. Therefore, ActionAid is committed to help farmers to adapt modern farming techniques in order to attain food security to end poverty, injustice and exclusion. ActionAid Somaliland strives to help smallholder farmers to have skills and knowledge about their farms to create sustainable livelihood sources. In that regards, ActionAid is going to create Farming Field School group in Boqor Village. The group will be trained on FFS practices.
The Farmer Field School (FFS) approach has been practiced for many years in different parts of the world with considerable success. ActionAid, As an Organization helping local smallholder farmers, will train one group of 30 participants on Farming Field School. The training will be in dept where the facilitator will introduce the FFS practices using Demo plots by growing different cash crops.

Specific Objectives

The core objectives of the training are the following:

Establishing Farming Field School group that consists of 30 participants
Identification and Preparation of Demo Plot for the FFS group practical purposes
Comprehensive Introductionof Farmer Field School Principles and Methods
Leading the FFS group with learn by doing approach using demo plots
Provide and apply agronomic knowledge during the FFS establishment
Train and mentor the FFSgroup members accordingly during with the FFS skill
To propagate the Idea of FFS to the farmer communities in order to improve their livelihood sources.


The facilitator will use non-formal education (NFE) approaches used in the Farmer Field School learning which includes: sharing, case studies, role play (dramatized sessions), problem solving exercises, panel discussions, group dynamics, small group and large group discussion, brainstorming, using PRA Tools and any other understandable approaches by the communities.

Duties and responsibilities

The training facilitator is expected to perform the following activities:

Come up with detailed proposal reflecting training contents and methodologies
Develop quality training materials i.e. training manual, any relevant extension advisory services, and tools for farmers training at village level.
Responsible for recording daily attendance of participants and handling sessions with strict supervision and controlling. The participant lists have to be disaggregated by gender and age
Facilitate the FFS skill training to the 30 participants with the practical ap
Demonstrate quality facilitation skills during the sessions
Produce report with sound case studies and action photos at the end of the training

Expected outcome:

Established strong FFS group consisting of 30 participants
Educate the 30 FFS group members on Climate Resilience Sustainable Agriculture
Produce manual book that provides guidelines of the FFS farm established.

Required Qualificationsand experience

The applicant should possess the following qualifications and experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture
Minimum of 3 years of prior hands-on experience about FFS
experience in conducting similar trainings and community work in agro-pastoral at rural settings
Excellent communication and dissemination skills and fluency in Somali and English languages
Strong facilitation skills
Report writing skills
